Idioms Containing Four Cosmic Elements in Chinese and Thai Languages

This paper aims to provide a general analysis of and comparison between Chinese and Thai idiomatic expressions related to 4 cosmic elements: “soil”, “water”, “wind” and “fire” by using contrastive analysis theory which pairs up Chinese and Thai idiomatic expressions. The word “soil”, “water”, “wind” and “fire” can be found in many Chinese and Thai idiomatic expressions. Some of these diverse expressions are ones in which the meaning and the comparison are the same or similar to Thai idiomatic expressions; some are ones in which the meaning is the same but some of the comparison are different from Thai idiomatic expressions and some are ones in which the meaning is the same but the comparison are totally different from Thai idiomatic expressions.
