The Historical Development of Coordinative Conjunctions in The Chinese Language
Abstract
This paper discusses a brief history of the evolution of noun phrase (NP) coordinative conjunctions from the Archaic to Contemporary Chinese periods. It gives some explanations on certain semantic characteristics of coordinate conjunctions in the Chinese language during their development of various stages. The study finds that through linguistic compromises and competitions, some coordinative conjunctions lost their dominance, some coexisted and some followed separate paths in their development.
