“Water” in Chinese Idiomatic Expressions
Abstract
The word “water” can be found in many Chinese idiomatic expressions. There expressions are reflections of Chinese culture, beliefs, philosophy, ecology, geography and climate. Some of these expressions are quite similar with Thai idiomatic expressions both in the meaning conveyed and the analogy used; some, though having the same analogy, convey completely different meaning in Chinese and Thai. However, there are also some cases that different analogies convey the same meaning in both languages.
