Abstract

This study aimed to (1) develop a gamification-integrated Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) instructional model to enhance Chinese reading comprehension among Mathayom 3 students based on the 75/75 efficiency criterion and (2) compare students’ pretest and posttest performance. A quasi-experimental, one-group pretest–posttest design was employed with 34 Mathayom 3/2 students from a school in Maha Sarakham Province during the second semester of the 2025 academic year (B.E. 2568), selected through cluster random sampling. This study employed a quasi-experimental research design. The instruments comprised five lesson plans and a 30-item reading comprehension test. Data were analyzed using means, standard deviations, the Index of Item-Objective Congruence, item difficulty and discrimination indices, KR-20 reliability, E1/E2 efficiency analysis, the Shapiro–Wilk test, and the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. The findings revealed that (1) the instructional model achieved an E1/E2 efficiency of 78.24/77.47 against the 75/75 criterion. Within the acceptable tolerance of ±2.5 percentage points (72.50–77.50), E2 met the specified range, whereas E1 exceeded its upper limit by 0.74 percentage points, warranting consideration of activity difficulty, scoring criteria, and assessment quality; and (2) posttest scores (M = 23.24, S.D. = 2.59) significantly exceeded pretest scores (M = 11.18, S.D. = 2.47; Wilcoxon signed-rank test, p < .001, rank-biserial r = 1.00). These findings suggest that gamification-integrated TBLT may enhance Chinese reading comprehension, although interpretation should consider the efficiency criteria, lack of a control group, and instrument quality.
