A Comparative Study of Chinese Idiomatic Expressions Containing the Word “shuǐ” and Those Containing the Word “shān”

This research aims to study the meanings and categories of Chinese idiomatic expressions containing the word shuǐ and those containing the word shān, and to compare Chinese idiomatic expressions containing only the word shuǐ with those containing only the word shān. The findings are as follows: 1) the word shuǐ and the word shān, when appearing in the same idiomatic expressions, usually imply similar meanings; 2) idiomatic expressions containing only the word shuǐ and those containing only the word shān mostly belong to the same meaning categories and can be used in the same domain, but they may represent different aspects, since water and mountains have different characteristics.
