Zen and Chinese Poetry
Abstract
The Tang Dynasty (A.D. 618-907) is a celebrated period of brilliant achievements in the advent of Buddhism and poetry writing in Chinese history. Readers can clearly feel the influence of Buddhism thinking in the verses of the poets, in which the Zen sect was given great emphasis and the Buddhism Mood (Zen Mood) is expressed by interpreting the rivers and mountains in pastoral scenes. This so called "Zen poetry" has a special charm of language and image creation. The latter half of this article presents features of Zen Poetry with a sample analysis of Lily Magnolia Enclosure (Xin Yi Wu), a famous poem by Wang Wei.
