Effects of Using International Songs on English Listening Competence and Learning Behaviors of Rural Primary Students in Chaiyaphum Province

The purposes of this study were 1) to compare the English listening competence of rural primary school students in Chaiyaphum Province before and after learning through international song activities, and 2) to examine students’ learning behaviors in developing English listening skills through international music genres. The study employed a mixed-methods design, integrating quasi-experimental and qualitative approaches. The participants were fourteen of primary 4 students Ban Huai Wa School, Chaiyaphum Province. They were enrolled in semester two of the academic year 2024. They were selected using purposive sampling. The research instruments consisted of lesson plans for English listening through international songs, English listening tests, and behavioral observation forms. The data were analyzed using t-test.
The results were as following:
- The findings revealed that the students’ post-test scores on English listening competence were significantly higher than their pre-test scores at the 0.05 level.
- The qualitative results indicated that students exhibited seven dimensions of learning behavior: interest and motivation, learning strategies, participation in learning, development of listening skills, attitudes and emotions, social interaction, and obstacles to listening skill development.
