This research aimed to 1) explore the needs of transgender women who have not undergone sex reassignment surgery regarding swimwear, and 2) design swimwear that appropriately fits their unique body structures. A qualitative research method was employed using in-depth interviews with ten transgender women aged 20-30 years, selected through purposive sampling. The data were analyzed through content analysis to inform the design of prototype swimwear.
The findings revealed that transgender women require swimwear that can discreetly and securely conceal the genital area, with features such as tight fit, flexibility, good ventilation, and modern aesthetics that enhance confidence. The design incorporated curved and diagonal lines, consistent patterns, and contrasting dark tones to help obscure body contours. The material used was Nylon Spandex (88% nylon + 12% spandex) with high elasticity, supported by a double-layered lining of Power Mesh (95% nylon + 5% spandex) designed to ensure smooth and secure concealment. The selected prototype was produced and tested through real-life wear trials, which showed a high level of satisfaction among users in terms of comfort, safety, aesthetics, and gender expression confidence. This research highlights the potential for commercial development and promotes inclusive fashion design that creatively and sustainably addresses gender diversity.
