Abstract

The purposes of this research were to 1) compare the results of English listening ability assessments between traditional and online testing with a criterion of 70 percent of second-year English major students, 2) examine differences satisfaction toward the two assessment formats, and 3) investigate students’ behavior during the assessments. This research employed a mixed-method. The target group consisted of 43 second-year English major students selected by purposive sampling from the Faculty of Education and Human Development at Chaiyaphum Rajabhat University in the second semester of the 2025 academic year. The research instruments included a traditional and an online listening tests, questionnaire, and behavioral observation form. Data were analyzed using percentage, mean, standard deviation, and content analysis.

The results were as follows.

  1. The result of the traditional listening test score was 67.52 percent, which was below the 70 percent criterion. In contrast, the online test score was 75.33 percent, exceeding the criterion. Students scored, on average, 2.34 points higher on the online test than on the traditional test.
  2. The result of students’ satisfaction was at a high level of satisfaction with the online testing format (= 4.50), which was higher than the traditional testing format (= 4.02), rated at a high level.
  3. The observational results of students’ behavior during assessment in the traditional testing revealed that the prominent behaviors of the target group consisted of paying attention and concentration, focusing on strategies and response behaviors in listening, and controlling etiquette and emotional. Similarly, during the online testing, the target group prominently paid high intent attention and concentration. There were no negative etiquette and emotional state. They had good body-language strategies and response behaviors during listening.
