Abstract

This research aimed to: 1) develop an analytic rubric for assessing English speaking skills, 2) evaluate students’ communicative speaking ability, and 3) examine students’ satisfaction toward the use of the analytic rubric. The study was conducted using an action research approach. The sample consisted of 45 second-year English major students from the Faculty of Education and Human Development, Chaiyaphum Rajabhat University, selected by purposive sampling. The research instruments included an analytic rubric for assessing English speaking skills covering five components: fluency, accuracy, vocabulary, pronunciation, and content organization, as well as a student satisfaction questionnaire. The data were analyzed using mean and standard deviation. The results revealed that:

          1.The students’ communicative speaking ability after the implementation of the analytic rubric was at a high level, with an overall mean score of 3.16 and a standard deviation of 0.83 Considering each aspect, fluency showed the highest mean ( = 3.31, S.D. = 0.87), followed by accuracy ( = 3.27, S.D. = 0.75), pronunciation ( = 3.27, S.D. = 0.81), content organization and Discourse ( = 3.07, S.D. = 0.94), and vocabulary ( = 2.89, S.D. = 0.78), respectively.

  1. The students’ satisfaction toward the use of the analytic rubric was at a high level overall, with a mean score of 4.97 and a standard deviation of 0.09       When considered by aspects, the accuracy of language in the assessment criteria showed the highest mean ( = 5.00, S.D. = 0.00), followed by fluency ( = 4.99, S.D. = 0.11), and content organization and discourse ( = 4.99, S.D. = 0.11),  respectively.
