The Development of Reading, Analytical Thinking, and Writing Skills Using Skill Exercise Packages for Prathomsuksa 5 Students at Marie Upatham Chaiyaphum School

Abstract

The purposes of this research were: 1) to develop reading, analytical thinking, and writing skills of Grade 5 students through the use of skill exercises; and 2) to compare students’ learning achievement before and after the implementation of the skill exercises. The sample consisted of 31 Grade 5/3 students studying at Marie Upatham Chaiyaphum School during the first semester of the 2025 academic year. The sample was selected through simple random sampling using the lottery method. The research instruments included: 1) reading, analytical thinking, and writing skill exercises; 2) a reading, analytical thinking, and writing skills assessment form; and 3) a 20-item learning achievement test. The statistics used for data analysis were mean, standard deviation, and dependent samples t-test. Mean ()and standard deviation (S.D.) were employed to analyze students’ reading, analytical thinking, and writing skills, while the dependent samples t-test was used to compare learning achievement before and after the intervention. The statistical significance level was set at .05

            The results of the research revealed that: 1) the students' overall reading, analytical thinking, and writing skills were at a "Very Good" level (= 2.84, $S.D.$ = 0.32). When considering each aspect individually, it was found that reading skills were at a very good level (= 2.96, $S.D.$ = 0.14), analytical thinking skills were at a very good level (= 2.74, $S.D.$ = 0.44), and writing skills were at a very good level (= 2.81, $S.D.$ = 0.37). 2) The post-test academic achievement scores were significantly higher than the pre-test scores at the .05 level.

            The knowledge gained from this research indicates that learning management through integrated skill-practice exercises, encompassing purposeful reading, analytical thinking, providing information and expressing opinions, and purposeful writing, can systematically develop students' reading, analytical thinking, and writing skills, leading to improved academic achievement.
