Basic knowledge of laws in Thailand

Abstract

This article aims to study basic knowledge about law in Thailand. The findings from this study reveal that Thai law has diverse origins, which can be divided into three main periods: authentic Thai law, law influenced by India, and law influenced by the West. The primary source of Thai law, however, is written law, also known as statutory law. If a specific matter is not stipulated in written law, customary law governs. If customary law does not exist, general legal principles apply. Section 4 of the Civil and Commercial Code is considered the origin of law. Furthermore, law also originates from religion and morality. In summary, Thai law is a civil law system that combines laws derived from tradition, traditional culture, and laws influenced by foreign sources. It governs individual behavior and is enforceable. Violations are punished according to the law. This standard serves as a measure of right and wrong for members of society. Law plays an important role in maintaining public order.
