Inscription of the restoration of Prasat Nakhon Luang and Wat Mai Prachumphon During the reign of King Chulalongkorn

Abstract

This article presents the transcription and interpretation of inscriptions that provide evidence of the restoration of Prasat Nakhon Luang and Wat Mai Prachum Phon during the reign of King Chulalongkorn. The key inscriptions examined include those related to the restoration of the four-footprint Buddha monument, the bases of Buddha images at Prasat Nakhon Luang, and the poetic inscription on the restoration of the Wihan Luang Pho Songtham at Wat Mai Prachum Phon.

The inscriptions found at Prasat Nakhon Luang reveal that the restoration of the four-footprint Buddha monument replica and the Buddha images within both the monument and the cloister were the result of collective efforts by monks, particularly Phrakru Wihan Kitchanukan (Phra Palad Pluem), and with the cooperation of royal family members, nobles, officials, and the general public who served as patrons. The restoration was completed between 1903 and 1906.

The poetic inscription on the restoration of the Wihan Luang Pho Songtham at Wat Mai Prachum Phon narrates the restoration of the vihara in 1893. It also discusses the merits of making merit and Buddhist principles.

These inscriptions serve as crucial evidence highlighting the importance of the restoration of Ayutthaya-era historical sites during the reign of King Chulalongkorn. They also reflect the collective efforts of society in preserving cultural heritage.
