COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION IN INTEGRATED WASTE MANAGEMENT: A PATHWAY TO LOCAL SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

Municipal solid waste is a major environmental issue in Thailand, with increasing trends driven by population growth, economic development, and changing consumption patterns. Effective waste management requires collaboration among multiple sectors, particularly active community participation. This article aims to examine the concepts, models, and factors related to community participation in integrated waste management, as well as to analyze applicable approaches for promoting sustainable local development. The findings indicate that integrated waste management should cover the entire process, including waste reduction, segregation, reuse, recycling, and proper disposal. Community participation can occur at various stages, including planning, implementation, and monitoring and evaluation. Key success factors include strong community leadership, public knowledge and attitudes, and support from government agencies.
The study highlights that promoting community participation can reduce environmental impacts, improve resource efficiency, and effectively support sustainable local development.
