Khaosaw “The myth and restoration of Wat Suan Dok, Chiang Mai”: Evidence about public participation in the restoration in 1931

Abstract

The article presents a study of the Khaosaw “The myth and restoration of Wat Suan Dok, Chiang Mai” with literary analysis theory. That study about characteristics of manuscript and Value of content, Especially, reflection of society which shows the public participation in the restoration of Wat Suan Dok in 1931.

This study found the writing was published with Lanna Tham script by American Printing. It was composed in parody, Khaosaw. The important value of that writing is evidencing about the restoration of Wat Suan Dok with the public participation by people who faithful in Buddhist. The writing gives details of the event very well. it shown; 1) chronology of events: The date of each event is clearly and mentioned in order. 2) Participating persons: include secular, monks, and construction material dealers. This Khaosaw gives information about the hosts in restoring - names and their domicile. it shows the public participation that consistent with other evidence. 3) Restoration details: it shown details of the restoration; Vihara, main stupa, smaller stupas, and the Buddha image that as tall as Kruba Srivichai.

This writing also showed the public participation is based on their faith in Buddhism. Especially, faith in Kruba Srivichai - The head of restoring. it shows views on him: 1) expert in restoration work, 2) have a great merit, and 3) be the Bodhisattva. their lead to cooperation which this event was successful.
