Language Use Strategies for Conveying the Emotions of Unrequited Love in the Isan country song in Thai Ban The Series

Abstract

This article aims to study about language use strategies to convey the emotions of unrequited love in Isan country song: Thai Ban The Series and to study the elements of communication according to Dell Hymes Ethnographic Framework for Communication. The results of the study found that the following language strategies are used: 1) Words use Strategies 1.1) Reduplication 1.2) Duplicate 1.3) Imagination and 1.4) Rhythm. 2) Rhetoric use Strategies include: 2.1) Metaphors, 2.2) Hyperboles and 2.3) Rhetorical question.

Components of communication according to Dell Hymes ethnographic framework of communication found: 1) Setting/Scenes that appear in the story include the house, the protagonist's bedroom, village, health promoting hospital, classroom, school, teacher's residence, temples, funerals, weddings, rice fields, huts, forests, aquariums and village markets. 2) Participant found are the male protagonist, female protagonist, friends of the main character, ex-lovers of the protagonists, singers and villagers. 3) Ends that appears in the communication in all songs is to describe love. 4) Act sequence that appears include love telling, saying goodbye, rejecting, thanking, complaining, apologizing, begging, sarcasm, promises, reactions, lamenting, questions, telling stories and slanderous words. 5) Key of the singers and the characters There use familiarly tone when talking about the loved ones, also lamenting, begging, pleading, sadness, and sarcastic tones. 6) Instrumentalities used include non-verbal language, lyrics, and code-mixing 7) Norms of Interaction and Interpretation:  using the standards of morality, ethics, interactions regarding sincerity, love, goodwill, first love, pure love, feelings of guilts, sadness, and love triangles. 8) Genre: include lyrics, conversation, and epigram.
