Mindful Living in a Fast-Paced Society: A Buddhist Psychology Perspective

Abstract

This study aimed to: (1) examine the concept of mindful living within the framework of Buddhist psychology; (2) analyze the problems and obstacles to mindfulness in the fast-paced digital society; and (3) propose guidelines for developing mindfulness based on Buddhist psychological principles to enhance quality of life. The research employed a qualitative mixed-methods approach, integrating the framework of Satipatthana 4 and Positive Psychology. The study was conducted in temples and meditation centers in Bangkok and its metropolitan area. Key informants consisted of 120 participants, including Vipassana meditation teachers, psychologists, and meditation practitioners, selected through purposive sampling. Three research instruments were utilized: (1) in-depth interviews, (2) participant observation, and (3) a mindfulness and well-being assessment scale. Data were analyzed using content analysis and descriptive interpretation.

The findings revealed that: (1) mindfulness in Buddhist psychology comprises four core components—body contemplation, feeling contemplation, mind contemplation, and dhamma contemplation—which can be effectively integrated with Western psychology in reducing stress and enhancing well-being; (2) the fast-paced digital society contributes to a high level of mind wandering (68.4%) among participants, primarily due to social media usage, work pressure, and consumerist values; and (3) the development of mindfulness based on Buddhist psychology operates at three levels: individual practice, community support, and organizational integration. Consistent application of these practices was found to reduce stress levels by 42.6%. The knowledge generated from this study highlights the significant potential of mindfulness in Buddhist psychology for addressing mental health challenges in contemporary society. It can be applied to develop practical mindfulness training programs for organizations and communities.
