The Odyssey of Thai-Cambodian Relations: Dual Nations, Shared Roots, and a Myriad of Conflicts

Abstract
This article investigates the underlying causes of the persistent animosity between Thailand and Cambodia that has escalated into contemporary conflict, with a specific focus on the six primary allegations leveled by Cambodia against Thailand. By examining bilateral interactions from the ancient Khmer era to the present, the study reveals that the origins of this friction are deeply complex, rooted in the ethno-linguistic assimilation of diverse groups into populations that now share indistinguishable genetic and cultural proximity. While historical grievances inflicted by Siam serve as a foundational cause of Cambodian resentment, the study finds that the current intensification of hostility is primarily driven by the deliberate instrumentalization of these historical wounds by Cambodia’s modern leadership for political gain. Furthermore, the provocative stance of current Cambodian leaders presents a threat to Thailand that cannot be overlooked. Finally, this paper proposes possible measures for managing these deep-seated tensions and mitigating associated threats to ensure a more favorable relation.
