บทความนี้ศึกษาแนวคิดเรื่องหน้าที่ต่อความทรงจำในงานเขียนเรื่อง Memory, History, Forgetting ของปอล ริเคอร์ โดยริเคอร์เสนอว่าหน้าที่ต่อความทรงจำคือหน้าที่ต่อความยุติธรรม ในด้านหนึ่ง ริเคอร์ชี้ให้เห็นว่าความทรงจำไม่ใช่สิ่งที่เราต่างคนต่างจำ แต่ความทรงจำคือการนำเสนออดีตที่อาศัยการสนับสนุนจากสังคม ด้วยเหตุผลดังกล่าว การมีความทรงจำจึงเป็นสิ่งที่ต้องคำนึงถึงความยุติธรรมต่อคนอื่น ในขณะเดียวกัน ความทรงจำยังเป็นสิ่งที่ต้องอาศัยประวัติศาสตร์เพื่อที่เราจะสามารถยืนยันความจริงร่วมกับคนอื่น ประวัติศาสตร์ทำให้เราสามารถตระหนักถึงความทรงจำบาดแผลที่ไม่ถูกจดจำโดยสังคม จากการศึกษาข้อถกเถียงของริเคอร์ บทความนี้เสนอว่าหน้าที่ต่อความทรงจำไม่ได้เป็นเพียงหน้าที่ในการจดจำข้อเท็จจริงบางอย่าง แต่เป็นหน้าที่ในการมีความยุติธรรมต่อความทรงจำของคนอื่น
