The Development of Reading Comprehension Abilities Using a Skill Training Exercise with SQ4R Reading Techniques for Mathayom 2 Students

Abstract

This study aimed to: (1) develop an instructional approach using a skill-based exercise package combined with the SQ4R reading technique to enhance reading comprehension abilities; (2) compare the reading comprehension abilities of Mathayom 2 (Grade 8) students before and after the intervention; and (3) investigate students' satisfaction with the instruction. This research employed a quasi-experimental design. The target group consisted of 15 Mathayom 2 students from Bangkok Witthaya School (Foundation) during the second semester of the 2023 academic year, selected through purposive sampling. The research instruments included: (1) a skill training exercise package on reading comprehension, (2) instructional lesson plans incorporating the SQ4R technique, (3) a reading comprehension ability test, and (4) a student satisfaction questionnaire. Data were analyzed using mean, standard deviation, and dependent samples t -test. The findings revealed that: (1) the overall quality of the instructional package with the SQ4R technique was at a very good level; (2) students' reading comprehension abilities after the intervention were significantly higher than before, at the .05 level of significance; and (3) students’ overall satisfaction with the instruction was at the highest level.
