Mor Lam Rueang Torklon is a significant folk performing art of Northeastern Thailand. The relationship between performers and audiences has existed for a long time. Over the past decade, particularly following the COVID-19 pandemic, social media platforms have transformed this relationship from primarily attending live performances at traditional merit-making ceremonies to following performers through online channels where audiences can interact directly with performers. Most previous research has focused solely on the adaptation of performers and Mor Lam troupes in the digital era, while in-depth studies on the roles and characteristics of fans remain limited. This group serves as a crucial mechanism driving the sustainability of folk performing arts in the digital age.
This research aims to 1) examine the patterns of Mor Lam Rueang Torklon performers' fans in digital society, and 2) investigate the roles and characteristics of these fans in the digital era. This is qualitative research. The informant group comprises 15 Mor Lam Rueang Torklon fans, 8 Mor Lam Rueang Torklon performers, and 5 troupe managers, totaling 28 people, selected through purposive sampling. Research instruments for data collection include observation forms, surveys, and in-depth interview guides. Research findings are presented through descriptive analysis.
The findings reveal that the patterns of Mor Lam Rueang Torklon fans in the digital era has shifted from exclusively following live performances to hybrid consumption through three primary online platforms: Facebook, TikTok, and YouTube. Fans can be categorized into two main groups: migrant workers (aged 30-60 years) who use Mor Lam as a medium to connect with their cultural identity and alleviate homesickness, and younger fans (aged 18-25 years) who access Mor Lam through rapidly spreading online media and perceive it as contemporary entertainment. The roles of fans in the digital era comprise five aspects: 1) supporters providing moral encouragement and financial contributions through online tipping, 2) distributors and promoters disseminating content through sharing that is 3-5 times more effective than direct advertising, 3) content creators producing highlight clips, creating memes, and fan art, 4) community builders connecting relationships between fans and performers, and 5) feedback providers enabling performers to improve their performances promptly. Fan characteristics can be classified by engagement levels into three groups: hardcore fans (30%), casual fans (50%), and new fans (20%). Fan loyalty emerges from three critical factors: performance quality, perceived intimacy through online interactions, and sense of belonging to the community. Fans in the digital era demonstrate high participation through liking, sharing, commenting, and sending online tips, which contribute to the success and sustainability of Mor Lam Rueang Torklon performers' careers in the digital age.
This research extends understanding of participatory culture in the context of Thai folk performing arts and demonstrates that the relationship between artists and fans in the digital era can be applied as guidelines for online community management for performers and troupe managers to ensure career sustainability and preserve cultural heritage in digital society.
