Abstract

This survey research aimed to: 1) investigate the current state of English language learning management using Generative Artificial Intelligence (Generative AI) to promote academic writing ability and critical thinking among higher education students; and 2) examine approaches to English language learning management using Generative AI. The target population comprised 43 English major students at the Faculty of Humanities, Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University, Nong Khai Campus, in the 2026 academic year. The entire population was included in the study. The research instrument was a five-point rating-scale questionnaire with open-ended questions. Content validity was examined by five experts, and reliability was assessed using Cronbach’s alpha coefficient. Data were analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation.
The findings revealed that: 1) the overall state of English language learning management using Generative AI was at a high level (x̄ = 4.12, S.D. = 0.54). The use of Generative AI to develop English writing skills had the highest mean score (x̄ = 4.18, S.D. = 0.52), followed by the integration of Generative AI into learning activities (x̄ = 4.12, S.D. = 0.55), and the use of Generative AI to promote critical thinking (x̄ = 4.05, S.D. = 0.56); and 2) the overall approaches to learning management were at a high level (x̄ = 4.39, S.D. = 0.58). Promoting ethics and responsibility in AI use received the highest mean score (x̄ = 4.51, S.D. = 0.52), followed by using AI as an assistant for planning and developing academic writing, verifying the accuracy of AI-generated information, analyzing and critically evaluating AI-generated outputs, and practicing prompt writing, respectively. The findings suggest that English language learning management should position Generative AI as a supportive tool for writing and critical thinking, while emphasizing students’ verification, evaluation, and decision-making, together with ethical and responsible use of technology.
